Mean arterial pressure calculator
Enter the top and bottom numbers of a blood pressure reading to see the mean arterial pressure to one decimal, with the pulse pressure beside it. A standard estimate from two numbers, with no label on the reading, and it runs entirely in your browser.

Mean arterial pressure
Enter both numbers
The mean arterial pressure appears here once the top and bottom numbers of a reading are filled in.
A clinician reads blood pressure across repeated readings over time, not from a single number.
A calculator, not a diagnosis.
This page estimates mean arterial pressure from the two numbers of one reading. It does not measure it, and one reading says little on its own: blood pressure changes through the day and with posture, activity, and the cuff. This tool is for adults. A licensed clinician reads blood pressure across repeated readings and alongside your history.
Methodology
- How this is calculated
- Mean arterial pressure is the diastolic (bottom) number plus one third of the difference between the systolic (top) and diastolic numbers: MAP = DBP + (SBP - DBP) / 3. It is shown to one decimal. Pulse pressure is the top number minus the bottom number, shown as a whole number.
- Where the data comes from
- This one-third formula is a long-standing bedside estimate, and this page found no original publication to cite for it, so it names none. It follows the reference chapter that states it: DeMers D, Wachs D, Physiology, Mean Arterial Pressure, StatPearls (NCBI Bookshelf NBK538226, last updated April 10, 2023), which defines mean arterial pressure as the average arterial pressure through one cardiac cycle and gives this formula as a common way to estimate it.

- What this does not account for
- How the reading was taken, heart rate, and every other fact a clinician weighs. The formula is an approximation of an average, not a measurement of it: some automated cuffs report a measured mean pressure of their own, which can differ from this estimate. This page does not label or stage a reading.
What mean arterial pressure is
A blood pressure reading has two numbers: the systolic pressure while the heart contracts and the diastolic pressure while it relaxes between beats. Mean arterial pressure is the average pressure in the arteries across that whole cycle. The formula on this page estimates it from the two numbers alone.
What pulse pressure is
Pulse pressure is the gap between the two numbers. It is shown beside the mean because both come from the same two numbers.
Neither number is a verdict on a single reading. Blood pressure is judged over several readings on different days, which is why this page leaves every reading unlabeled.
