eGFR calculator
Enter age, sex, and a serum creatinine value in mg/dL or µmol/L to see the estimated GFR the race-free CKD-EPI 2021 creatinine equation returns.

This is an estimate from one lab value. A clinician reads it alongside the rest of your record.
A calculator, not a diagnosis.
This tool is for adults. The CKD-EPI 2021 creatinine equation was developed and validated in adults, estimates for children use different equations entirely, and Temi's tools are written for adults. The equation estimates kidney filtration from a single creatinine value, and creatinine varies with muscle mass, diet, pregnancy, amputation, acute illness, and some medications, so a single value on a single day is not a measurement of filtration.
Methodology
- How this is calculated
- eGFR in mL/min/1.73 m² is 142 times min(Scr/κ, 1) raised to α, times max(Scr/κ, 1) raised to -1.200, times 0.9938 raised to the age in years, times 1.012 for the female equation. Scr is serum creatinine in mg/dL; κ is 0.7 for the female equation and 0.9 for the male one, and α is -0.241 for the female equation and -0.302 for the male one. A creatinine entered in µmol/L is converted to mg/dL first, using creatinine's molar mass (about 88.4 µmol/L per mg/dL). The result is rounded to a whole number.
- Where the data comes from
- Inker LA, Eneanya ND, Coresh J, et al. New Creatinine- and Cystatin C–Based Equations to Estimate GFR without Race. N Engl J Med. 2021;385(19):1737-1749. The coefficients are the paper's own, from its table of current and new equations, for the creatinine equation without race.

- What this does not account for
- People under 18. Muscle mass, diet, pregnancy, amputation, acute illness, and medications that change creatinine without changing filtration. Cystatin C, which the same paper also used and this tool does not ask for. Body size: the result is scaled to a standard body-surface area of 1.73 m², not to the person entered.
What eGFR is
GFR, the glomerular filtration rate, is how much blood the kidneys filter each minute. Measuring it directly takes a special test, so labs usually report an estimate, eGFR, calculated from a blood creatinine value, age, and sex. The result is expressed per 1.73 m² of body-surface area, a standard adult size, so it can be compared between people.
Why there is no race input
The 2021 equation was published without a race coefficient, and Temi uses the race-free 2021 equation. Earlier creatinine equations multiplied the result by a coefficient for Black race. The 2021 authors refit the equation without it.
eGFR and creatinine clearance
The two numbers answer different questions. eGFR is a filtration rate normalized to a standard body-surface area. The creatinine clearance calculator uses the older Cockcroft and Gault equation, which takes weight and gives a clearance in mL/min for one person of that weight.
