How to take the Wegovy pill: morning routine and dose steps
Medically reviewed by Kevin Brandstetter, M.D.Last reviewed September 28, 2026
Swallow one Wegovy tablet whole each morning on an empty stomach, using no more than 4 ounces of plain water and nothing else. Wait at least 30 minutes before food, other drinks or other oral medicines. Doses rise every 30 days from 1.5 mg to the 25 mg maintenance dose; a missed tablet is simply skipped.
Before you start
Wegovy tablets are oral semaglutide, FDA-approved alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity for long-term weight reduction in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition, and to lower cardiovascular risk in adults with established heart disease. Tell your prescriber about any personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2, pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, diabetic eye disease, kidney disease, depression, pregnancy plans, or insulin or sulfonylurea use. The label advises against combining Wegovy with any other semaglutide product or GLP-1 medicine, so stop Ozempic, Rybelsus or compounded semaglutide only as your prescriber directs. Find a 30-minute gap in your morning first.
Step by step
Dose before breakfast
Take the tablet in the morning on an empty stomach, before food, coffee or any other tablets. Keeping the bottle beside your bed or toothbrush makes it easy to take the moment you wake, so the rest of your morning starts after the 30-minute clock.
Plain water only, 4 ounces at most
Swallow the tablet with water, no more than 4 ounces (about 120 mL). The Wegovy label specifically says not to take it with any other liquid, so juice, milk, tea, sparkling water and flavored drinks are all out, even in small amounts.
One whole tablet, never broken
The label says to swallow Wegovy tablets whole and not to split, crush, chew or dissolve them. Take exactly one tablet of the strength your prescriber chose; the four strengths are separate tablets, not multiples of each other.
Start a 30-minute timer
After swallowing, wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink anything other than that water, or take other oral medicines, supplements or vitamins. Waiting longer is fine. A phone timer removes the guesswork on busy mornings.
Take other medicines afterwards
Once 30 minutes have passed, have breakfast and take your other tablets. If you use levothyroxine, mention it: the Wegovy label reports total thyroxine exposure rose 33% when levothyroxine was given with oral semaglutide, so your thyroid dose may need monitoring.
Move up one step every 30 days
Each 30-day block uses one strength: 1.5 mg, then 4 mg, then 9 mg, then 25 mg. Check the strength on each new bottle. If side effects make a step hard to tolerate, the label lets your prescriber delay the increase rather than push on.
Keep the bottle closed and dry
Take each tablet straight from the original bottle and close the lid firmly. The label calls semaglutide in these tablets hygroscopic and says the bottle protects them from moisture, so a weekly pill box, bathroom shelf or open dish is not suitable.
Schedule
Wegovy tablets are taken once a day in the morning. The label's schedule is 1.5 mg for days 1 to 30, 4 mg for days 31 to 60, 9 mg for days 61 to 90, and the 25 mg maintenance dose from day 91 onward. The steps exist to reduce stomach side effects, and your prescriber may delay a step if you are struggling. If 25 mg is not tolerated, the label suggests considering Wegovy injection 1.7 mg weekly instead. Someone already on Wegovy 2.4 mg injections can start 25 mg tablets one week after their last injection.
How and where to take it
No injection is involved, so nothing needs rotating. The equivalent checklist for a tablet is about your stomach. Swallow it whole; do not split, crush, chew or dissolve it. Use only water, up to 4 ounces. Keep the stomach empty beforehand, which is why the label specifies a morning dose. Then keep it free of food, other drinks and other oral medicines for at least 30 minutes afterwards. If that routine does not work for you, the weekly injection has no food timing rules.
Storage
The Wegovy label says to store tablets at 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C), with short excursions permitted from 59°F to 86°F (15°C to 30°C). Each strength comes in a bottle of 30 tablets, and they must be stored and dispensed in that original bottle and kept in it until use, to protect them from moisture. Keep the bottle in a dry place, not a steamy bathroom or a hot car, out of children's reach, and do not use tablets past the expiry date.
If you miss a dose
If you miss a Wegovy tablet, the label says to skip that dose and take the next one the following day. Do not take it later once you have eaten, and never take two tablets to catch up. This differs from Wegovy injections, where the missed-dose rule depends on how many days remain until the next scheduled dose. If you miss several days, ask your prescriber before resuming.
If you take too much
If you take more Wegovy tablets than prescribed, call your healthcare provider or the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222, or go to the nearest emergency room, as the Medication Guide advises. Severe nausea, vomiting and dehydration are the main concerns, plus low blood sugar if you also use insulin or a sulfonylurea. Semaglutide's half-life is about one week, so the label notes observation may need to continue for some time.
What to avoid
Do not combine Wegovy with other semaglutide products or other GLP-1 medicines, which the label does not recommend. Avoid food, drinks and other tablets during the 30-minute wait. Keep alcohol modest; it can compound nausea and, with insulin or a sulfonylurea, low blood sugar. Take care driving if you feel dizzy. Tell any surgical or endoscopy team you take Wegovy, as the label warns of pulmonary aspiration during deep sedation. Report new or worsening low mood or suicidal thoughts promptly.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?
Both are oral semaglutide with the same morning routine, but they are separate products. Wegovy tablets come in 1.5, 4, 9 and 25 mg and are approved for weight reduction and cardiovascular risk reduction. Rybelsus comes in 3, 7 and 14 mg and is approved for type 2 diabetes. The labels do not treat them as interchangeable, and they should not be taken together.
How much weight loss does the Wegovy pill produce?
No one can promise a result, but the label reports the trial data. In Study 7, a 64-week trial of adults with obesity or overweight, people taking 25 mg tablets lost an average of 13.6% of body weight compared with 2.4% on placebo, alongside diet and activity changes. Individual responses vary widely, and the trial excluded people with type 2 diabetes.
Can I drink coffee before or after the Wegovy pill?
Not before, and not for at least 30 minutes after. The label allows only plain water, up to 4 ounces, with the tablet, and then asks you to wait 30 minutes before drinking any beverage. Coffee, including black coffee, counts as a beverage. Shifting your first cup back by half an hour is the usual fix.
Why does it take 90 days to reach 25 mg?
The label builds the dose up in three 30-day steps, 1.5 mg, 4 mg and 9 mg, before 25 mg on day 91, to reduce the risk of stomach side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Your prescriber can hold you on a step for longer if needed. Our titration planner lays out the dates for your own start day.
Can I switch between the Wegovy pill and the injection?
Yes, according to the label. From Wegovy 2.4 mg injections, start 25 mg tablets one week after the last injection. From 25 mg tablets, start the 2.4 mg weekly injection the day after the last tablet. If 25 mg tablets are not tolerated, the label suggests considering the 1.7 mg injection. Your prescriber decides the switch; do not bridge the two yourself.
What if I take levothyroxine every morning?
Both medicines like an empty stomach, so plan the order with your prescriber. The Wegovy label says to take the tablet first and wait 30 minutes before other oral medicines, and it reports a 33% rise in thyroxine exposure when levothyroxine was taken with oral semaglutide. Your thyroid levels may be checked more often after starting.
How do I travel with Wegovy tablets?
Pack the original bottle in your carry-on so it stays with you and away from hot cars and steamy hotel bathrooms. No refrigeration is needed; the label's storage range is 68°F to 77°F, with short excursions between 59°F and 86°F allowed. Across time zones, take the tablet on waking in the new location and keep the 30-minute wait.
Can I drink alcohol while taking the Wegovy pill?
The label does not set an alcohol limit, but alcohol can make nausea worse during dose increases and can lower blood sugar, which matters if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea. It also adds calories that work against the reduced-calorie diet the label pairs with treatment. Never take the tablet with alcohol, and discuss safe amounts with your prescriber.
