The short answer: a generic albuterol inhaler can cost less than $20 without insurance if you know where to look. The inhaler is often not the expensive part. The appointment to get it renewed is.
What an albuterol inhaler costs without insurance
Walmart lists albuterol HFA in its Prescription Program at $24 for one inhaler, for its preferred version of Proventil HFA only. Cost Plus Drugs, a mail-order pharmacy, lists generic albuterol HFA 90 mcg in three canister sizes: $12.31 for 8.5 g, $14.10 for 6.7 g, and $46.38 for 18 g, plus $5.25 shipping. Prices checked October 14, 2026.
Prices change by pharmacy, by inhaler, and by state. Walmart's own list says prices can be higher in some states, including California.
Four ways to pay less for the inhaler
- Ask for the cash price. For a generic inhaler, the cash price is sometimes lower than your insurance copay. The pharmacy will tell you both if you ask.
- Use a free discount card. Cards like the ones you see at the pharmacy counter cost nothing and can lower the cash price. Show it before they ring you up.
- Price the exact inhaler on your label. Generic albuterol inhalers are sold as the generic for Ventolin HFA, Proventil HFA, or ProAir HFA, in different canister sizes, and each has its own price. Read the label before you compare.
- Compare two or three pharmacies. A five-minute phone call can find the lowest price near you. You can move your prescription to whichever one wins.
The part nobody mentions: the visit
Somewhere between $12 and $47 for the inhaler. Then your refills run out, and the pharmacy says you need a new prescription.
That usually means booking an appointment, waiting for it, taking time off, and paying for the visit. For an inhaler you have used for years, the visit can cost more than the inhalers themselves.
How Temi fits
Temi is a doctor's office for exactly this moment.
- $15. That pays for a licensed physician to review your refill request. You see the price before you pay.
- No appointment, no video call. You answer a few questions online, any time of day.
- Your pharmacy. If the physician approves, the prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose. You pay the pharmacy for the inhaler, at whatever price you found above.
- Fast. We promise an answer within 48 hours. In the last 90 days, half of albuterol refill requests were sent to the pharmacy in about 4 hours.
The physician makes the call. The $15 covers the review whether or not a prescription is written. If you are not happy with the visit, tell us why and we refund it.
