Drug Details
Zyloprim (allopurinol) is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to lower uric acid levels in the blood. It is primarily prescribed to treat gout and to prevent kidney stones caused by high uric acid. It is also used to prevent elevated uric acid levels in patients receiving cancer chemotherapy.
Zyloprim works by blocking xanthine oxidase, an enzyme involved in the production of uric acid. By reducing the amount of uric acid your body makes, it helps prevent gout flares and the formation of uric acid kidney stones.
Do not take Zyloprim if you have had a serious allergic reaction to allopurinol. Zyloprim can cause severe skin reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), and drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS). Stop taking Zyloprim and seek medical attention immediately if you develop a skin rash, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.
The most common side effects include skin rash, diarrhea, nausea, and changes in liver function tests. Gout flares may increase when first starting Zyloprim. Your doctor may prescribe additional medication to help prevent flares during the first few months of treatment.
The usual starting dose for gout is 100mg once daily, which may be increased by 100mg at weekly intervals until the desired uric acid level is achieved. The average maintenance dose is 200-300mg per day for mild gout and 400-600mg per day for moderately severe gout. The maximum recommended dose is 800mg per day.
Your doctor should check your serum uric acid levels periodically (every 2-4 weeks after dose changes, then every 6-12 months). Liver function tests, kidney function tests, and complete blood counts should also be monitored, especially during the first few months of therapy.
