Drug Details

Do not stop taking ZARONTIN without first talking to your healthcare provider. Stopping ZARONTIN suddenly can cause serious problems.• ZARONTIN can cause serious side effects, including:• 1) Rare blood problems that can be life-threatening. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have fever, swollen glands, or frequent infections or if you bruise or bleed easily.• 2) Serious allergic reactions affecting many parts of your body such as your liver, kidneys, blood, heart, skin, or other parts of your body. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have joint pain, muscle pain, feeling very tired, chest pain, skin rash, or swelling of the face.• 3) Like other antiepileptic drugs, ZARONTIN may cause suicidal thoughts or actions in a very small number of people, about 1 in 500. Call a healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms, especially if they are new, worse, or worry you: thoughts about suicide or dying, attempts to commit suicide, new or worse depression, new or worse anxiety, feeling agitated or restless, panic attacks, trouble sleeping (insomnia), new or worse irritability, acting aggressive, being angry, or violent, acting on dangerous impulses, an extreme increase in activity and talking (mania), other unusual changes in behavior or mood.

Pay attention to any changes, especially sudden changes, in mood, behaviors, thoughts, or feelings. Keep all follow-up visits with your healthcare provider as scheduled. Call your healthcare provider between visits as needed, especially if you are worried about symptoms.

ZARONTIN is a prescription medicine used to treat absence (petit mal) seizures.

Do not take ZARONTIN if you are allergic to succinimides or any of the ingredients in ZARONTIN.

Before you take ZARONTIN, tell your healthcare provider if you:• have liver problems• have or have had depression, mood problems, or suicidal thoughts or behavior• are pregnant or planning to become pregnant (ZARONTIN may harm your unborn baby, talk to your healthcare provider about whether ZARONTIN may harm your unborn baby)• are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed (ZARONTIN can pass into your breast milk)• Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Take ZARONTIN exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to take it. Your healthcare provider will tell you how much ZARONTIN to take. Do not change your dose of ZARONTIN without talking to your healthcare provider. If you take too much ZARONTIN, call your local Poison Control Center or go to your nearest emergency room right away.

Do not drink alcohol or take other drugs that make you sleepy or dizzy while taking ZARONTIN without first discussing this with your healthcare provider. Taking ZARONTIN with alcohol or drugs that cause sleepiness or dizziness may make your sleepiness or dizziness worse. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or do other dangerous activities until you know how ZARONTIN affects you. ZARONTIN can slow your thinking and motor skills.

ZARONTIN may cause serious side effects. See 'What is the most important information I should know about ZARONTIN?'• The most common side effects of ZARONTIN include: nausea or vomiting, indigestion, stomach pain, diarrhea, weight loss, loss of appetite, hiccups, fatigue, dizziness or lightheadedness, unsteadiness when walking, headache, loss of concentration• These are not all the possible side effects of ZARONTIN. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.

Store ZARONTIN capsules at 59°F to 86°F (15°C to 30°C). Store ZARONTIN oral solution at 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Store ZARONTIN in a tight container. Protect from freezing and light. Keep ZARONTIN and all medicines out of the reach of children.

Active ingredient: ethosuximide• Inactive ingredients in ZARONTIN oral solution: citric acid anhydrous, FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Yellow No. 6, glycerin, purified water, raspberry flavor (artificial), saccharin sodium, and sodium citrate.
